Acting classes and coaches are important, no question about that. But they can’t take the place of practical experience, and success in class doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get that experience.
If you’re taking classes and workshops, I’m sure you’re very serious and committed. But are you being cast? If not, why not take a chance on something new?
If performing is what you love most, you should just do it.
I cast kids who’ve been professionally coached, kids who’ve been to many classes and workshops, and kids who haven’t. I’ve found that many of the most exciting, truthful and moving performances come from kids who have had little or no professional training. It’s because these kids are naturally open, enthusiastic, passionate and eager to learn. They are a joy to work with. They take everything in, and put everything they have into the work. These kids are often the most charismatic and believable young actors — they are the ones you can’t take your eyes off of.
So, if you’ve been taking classes and workshops, but haven’t spent a lot of time on stage, I encourage you to take a break from all of that.
Whether you’ve taken classes or not, come do a show with us. You’ll work hard, you’ll learn a lot, you’ll make friends and have a lot of fun, too. And when its over, you’ll have an off-Broadway credit for your resume.
